Bedtime audio stories: how to choose, how long to listen, and what to talk about after

Once kids start elementary school, bedtime often turns into “just one more episode.” Switching to a bedtime audio story is a good alternative: lights down, phone away, one story, then sleep. Kids settle down more easily, and parents don’t have to come up with a new story every night.

Why switch to listening

Listening to a story doesn’t involve staring at a screen. The lights can be low, and kids can listen lying down. They have to imagine the pictures themselves, and many kids relax as they listen. For our family, it’s also been a good way to replace watching videos before bed.

How to choose stories for bedtime

  • Stories with a steady pace and not too many sound effects or screams
  • Episodes of a consistent length, about 10 to 20 minutes
  • Nothing too scary, so kids don’t get more awake as they listen
  • Topics your child is into, like animals, historical figures or everyday stories

I listen to an episode myself before playing it for the kids. Some stories are great during the day but too exciting at night.

How long to listen, and where to put the phone

  • One or two episodes a night is enough. Agree on it in advance so it doesn’t become a “one more” tug-of-war
  • Use a sleep timer so it stops automatically
  • Put the phone or speaker away from the bed, screen face down
  • Keep the volume low: loud enough for you to hear outside the door, but not loud

What to talk about afterwards

Too much talking at bedtime makes kids more awake, so we ask just one question, or save it for the next morning:

  • Which character did you like best? Why?
  • What would you have done?
  • Was there anything in today’s story that seemed a bit off?

That last question is especially interesting. Kids start noticing things in the story that don’t add up, and that’s exactly where thinking for themselves begins.

If your child still can’t fall asleep

Every child is different. Some kids get more excited the longer they listen. If so, switch to calmer content, or read aloud to them quietly instead. If your child has trouble falling asleep over a long period, talk to your pediatrician.

FAQ

What age is right for bedtime audio stories?

Any child who can focus on a complete story, roughly age 4 or 5 and up. Younger kids can start with Mom or Dad reading picture books aloud.

Will my child come to depend on stories to fall asleep?

Treat the story as one fixed step in the bedtime routine. It doesn’t need to play every night until they’re asleep. Set a timer and let your child drift off on their own after the story ends.

Is it OK to fall asleep while listening?

Yes, but it’s a good idea to set a sleep timer so the audio doesn’t play all night.
